I Was Pulling for the White Guy
You want to know the main reason for my vote for Barack Obama, apart from the fact that he was young, charismatic, brilliant, and educated? Well, he was a black man and a democrat, one of many millions of other black democrats, but still one of a kind, an apogee of black excellence, unimpeachably great.
“But do you think white people are ready for him,” said Keith, a bespectacled black man who was also my co-worker. Keith and I were sitting before my computer at the Mental Health Center of Denver, our shared place of employment in the summer of 2007.
“I don’t know,” I said. “Maybe they won’t be ready for him. But I could care less if they are. We’ve had a white president in the White House for over two hundred years, with many of them working against our interests. It’s about time we get somebody in there who is going fight for our interests.”
“Yeah, but will he really fight for us if he is elected though? He may forget about the rest of us, which is often the case with black people who become rich, connected, and famous.”
“That’s only if you’re a black republican though. People like Clarence Thomas, and people of his ilk, they get some money and fame and forget about the rest of us. If Obama is elected, he and the other black democrats will do what they can to make things better. It’s the black republicans who…
